Make a pair of botanically-inspired silver and gemstone earrings - a workshop for complete beginners

A Digital Craft Festival Workshop

Join Cathy Newell Price and make a pair of sterling silver and gemstone earrings on a botanical theme.

All the specialist materials will be sent to you and most of the tools are things you will probably have around the house/in your toolbox.

Workshop outline
During the session you will learn how to texture metals with materials from you pack. The first activity will be using copper and then, once you have experimented with the techniques you will go on to make a pair of silver earrings with your own design on them. You will then polish up your silver, add the gemstone, and make your earwires to complete the earrings.

Workshop delivery
This is a live online zoom session. The workshop will feature live and pre-recorded demonstrations and you will be following along and making during the session. It will be a fun and sociable time. We will be working all together and in smaller groups so you will have a chance to chat to others as you work if you want to.

You will need a good internet connection and a laptop or tablet. You will be sent a link to join the workshop the day before the session. If you are borrowing a device you must let us know in advance the name of the device owner so that we recognise the name and let you in to the session.

The workshop duration will be approx. 2 hours.

Spaces are limited so you will have plenty of individual attention

What’s in the material pack?
The materials pack will contain all the materials you will need to make your earrings: Silver, copper, a choice of either beautiful watery-green or rich purple amethyst gemtone beads (make your choice from the drop down menu) and things to mark, finish and polish the metals.

What else will I need?

• A Hammer 
• A surface to hammer on, a steel block is ideal, but an old breadboard will be fine.
• Tape, preferably masking tape, but sellotape ok
• A pen, this is for shaping the ear-wires so if possible one about 1.0cm diameter would be ideal
• You will need to be able to cut some wire, many of you will have some kind of metal cutters in a toolbox, but strong kitchen type scissors will be ok - just don’t use your best sewing scissors! All the thicker pieces of wire will be pre-cut for you.
• You will need something to hold small pieces of wire so you can shape them easily, a small pair of round nosed pliers will increase your enjoyment of this workshop, you may already have something suitable, but if not you can add them to your order in the drop down menu or you can source your own - just google jeweller's round nosed pliers. 
• You may find a pair of tweezers handy, but not essential.

 Other FAQS:

• This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. It is aimed at adults but teenagers should be able to cope with it if they are supervised.
• The earrings are for pierced ears only, if you want advice on buying fittings for non-pierced ears please get in touch by sending a message with you order.
• When you buy this workshop the materials pack is included. 
• The gemstones in your pack may vary slightly in shape and size from the ones in the picture.
• The packs will be sent out about a week before the workshop
• The packs will only be sent to UK addresses
